Child Proof your Bathroom
Is your bathroom child safe ?
Your bathroom may be germ free and sparkling but is it a safe place for old people and children alike. A bathroom, if one looks closely is a potential accident area, particularly for children. Small remodelling measures can go a long way in making the bathroom a safe zone for children.
Take these steps to make your bathroom a child-friendly environment.
-
Do not allow children below 4 years to use the bathroom without the supervision of an adult. The child might find it difficult to seat itself or use the toilet on its own.
-
Secure all lower bathroom cabinets with safety latches.
-
Store medication, vitamins, hair bleach, hair dye, bathroom cleanser and other hazardous solutions in a locked cabinet or in another room. If not keep it at a height unreachable to the child.
-
Keep the bathroom floor dry at all times. Use rugs and mats to absorb excess dampness.
-
Instruct your child to not stash or throw any solids into the toilet bowl.
-
Use high stools if child finds it difficult to use the washbasin.
-
Do not allow young children to latch the door from inside as they might get locked in.
-
Leave some light (of a low watt) on in the bathroom during nights so that the child feels free to use the bathroom, if he wakes in the middle of the night.
-
Inspect the bathroom after the child finishes his ablutions. Look for soaps on the floor, improperly shut taps and geyser switches. Advise your child appropriately about safety.
-
Make sure your child does not handle electric switches with wet hands.
